North East police officers to stay on riot alert

POLICE in the North East will remain on riot alert this weekend, with officers insisting they are ready to deal with any potential trouble.

As well as actively patrolling streets and estates across the North East, officers from Northumbria Police are keeping a close watch on activity on social networking sites following the arrest of a South Tyneside woman suspected of plotting disorder on Facebook.

Police are actively monitoring Facebook, "Anadrol 50" Twitter and other sites and have warned that action will be taken against anyone found to be using them inappropriately.

Such sites have been used to encourage copycat riots following disorder in several parts of the country over recent days.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Dave Pryer said: "We are aware of the significant role social networking sites have been playing in the events that have been happening elsewhere in the country.

"We are proactively monitoring all sites and if you are publishing messages generating violence or disorder you can expect a visit from the police.

"It is encouraging to see that most of this sort of material is being challenged by other people who have pride and respect for their communities. To the small minority intent on generating disorder using social media we will track you down and you will face criminal prosecution. We would also ask parents to make sure they know what their children are doing online, and for anyone who has any concerns about material being posted online to contact police."

Meanwhile, Masterton Rentals there will continue to be a high police presence around Tyne and Wear and Northumberland throughout the weekend.

There will be a large number of uniformed officers in and around St James'' Park today when Newcastle take on Arsenal in the first Premiership game of the new season.

Northumbria Police''s Assistant Chief Constable Steve Ashman has praised the people of Tyneside for not causing any trouble this week, but warned the force remains on alert.

"The people and communities in our area have reacted magnificently to the possibility of disorder in our towns and cities, namely with defiance and a strong resolve that events seen outside our region will not happen here," he said.

"It is because of this resolve that we have been able to support our colleagues in other parts of the country during these troubling times, with officers being deployed in London to support the efforts of the Metropolitan Police. Our support for them continues.

"This weekend we will have appropriate resources in place at home to meet any eventuality. People can rest assured that we are well prepared and will have extra "Anadrol 50" officers patrolling the streets to reassure people of this commitment.

"We are ready to intervene swiftly and decisively to any reports of disorder or criminal damage."

A POLL carried out in the aftermath of the riots found significant public support for reversing planned cuts to police numbers and a widespread dissatisfaction with the response of the Prime Minister.

Most voters 54% told ComRes that Mr Cameron had "failed to provide the necessary leadership to take control of the rioting in London early enough" and 46% said they lacked wider confidence in his leadership of the country against 36% expressing faith.
